Michael Yeoh: Barisan Nasional will rule again by winning between 120 and 134 parliamentary seats

Nanyang Siang Pau, 7 May 2018

Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) chief executive officer Tan Sri Dr Michael Yeoh is another person after former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin who once gave accurate prediction of the election result. During last election, prior to May 5, 2013, Yeoh predicted that Barisan Nasional would win between 123 and 135 parliamentary seats where Umno win between 85 and 90 seats and DAP would be the greatest winner.
When polls result was announced, Barisan Nasional won 133 parliamentary seats to continue ruling Federal Government with Umno winning 88 parliamentary seats. Umno won additional 10 seats or 26% compared to the 12th General Election on Mach 08, 2008. DAP won 38 parliamentary seats (an increase of 35%), an unprecedented result for the party. The election result surprised those who have criticised Yeoh’s prediction for his overwhelming confidence in Barisan Nasional.
In this coming General Election, Yeoh predicted that the election would fall between April and early May. It turned out to be accurate.
As the polling day, which falls on May 9 is fast approaching, the battle among Barisan Nasional, PAS and Pakatan Harapan is heating up. In an exclusive interview with Yeoh, Nanyang Siang Pau listens to his prediction and analysis.
As the 14th General Election is entering into countdown, Yeoh, who delivered an accurate prediction of election result in 2013, said Barisan Nasional would win between 120 and 135 parliamentary seats out of 222 parliamentary seats to rule Federal Government.
For states, Yeoh said fights between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan are most intense in Kedah, Kelantan, Johor and Sabah. He predicted that Barisan Nasional would secure Johor and likely to re-capture Kelantan. For Pakatan Harapan, he said while retaining Penang and Selangor, the opposition may win Kedah.
“Another intense fight area is Kuala Lumpur, the Federal Territory.”
Yeoh, in releasing his analysis on the 14th General Election on March 2, predicted Barisan Nasional would continue to rule by winning between 125 and 140 parliamentary seats.
This time, when he was interviewed by Nanyang Siang Pau two months later, he revised his prediction to Barisan Nasional winning between 120 and 140 parliamentary seats.
Summing up Yeoh’s and Daim’s predictions (Yeoh predicted that Barisan Nasional would win while Daim’s conditional prediction that if 10 % of votes swing towards the opposition where the opposition also win 20 seats in Felda settlement, Pakatan Harapan stand a chance to rule Federal Government),  Barisan Nasional may still be unbeatable but rural seats in Felda area, Malay area and mixed area would determine who will capture Putrajaya.
