Yesterday, the head of AmBank Research,reported that Malaysia has the 3rd cheapest RON95 petrol in the world - behind Saudi Arabia and just 12sen behind Brunei, both of whom are large oil producers and exporters which Malaysia is not.
According to global petrol prices, Malaysia would be at 8th cheapest overall for petrol in the world as some countries do not have RON95 but have RON92 or lower.
Previously,, Nielsen said in 2014 that Malaysia has the highest number of households in the world who owns more than 1 car per household.
Overall, Malaysia has very high vehicle ownership - even higher than Japan, UK and just 3% below the USA which has the highest number of households who owns at least one car.
This is despite many Malaysians complaining about how oppressed they are and how the petrol price or the RM90 per year road-tax is "killing" them,
(how many km of road can your RM90 per year help build or maintain or light up?)
Zombies will then argue that taxes on cars are very high but do not understand that this is only true for certain range of cars which is above a certain value.
Cars at the Honda City/Vios range and below is not heavily taxed at all and these car prices do not differ much when compared overseas.
If you don't believe me, go to the website of Honda and Proton/Perodua and compare the prices for these car range in Langkawi/Labuan, where there is no tax at all, with peninsular Malaysia.
Since 2009, the government wants to change this high vehicle ownership because it results in traffic congestion and high capital outflows to overseas from buying the cars or raw materials and importing oil (yes, we are net importer of oil).
This is why the govt have invested heavily in public transport since.
