Court fixes Sept 30 for election petition hearing

The Election Court yesterday ordered both petitioner and respondent in an election petition to nullify the result of Pujut constituency in the last state election to file electronically all further affidavits, motions and submissions.
Datuk Hii Khing Chiong , the direct Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Pujut filed the petition to nullify the victory of Dr Ting Tiong Choon in the election.
On Thursday, Dr Ting submitted an application to the Election Court to strike out the petition made by Hii.
Judge Ravinthran N Paramaguru, who heard the petition, ordered Hii to file the affidavit within two weeks from yesterday, while respondent must reply within 10 days thereafter.
To ease of hearing, both parties were also ordered to upload written submissions 10 days thereafter. The oral arguments are fixed on Sept 30.
On June 16, Hii filed a petition in the Election Court to declare Dr Ting’s win  null and void on grounds of misinterpretation of his citizenship.
Hii claimed that Ting is an Australian citizen as his name appears in the country’s electoral roll.
Appearing for Dr Ting were Chong Siew Chiang and former Piasau assemblyman Alan Ling.
