The people of Sarawak have been asked to pray for Olympic silver medallist Pandelela Rinong Pamg as she prepares for her final event at the Rio Olympics.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the power of prayer and the people’s support could spur the state’s diving sensation on.
“Our prayers and support can help to lift her spirits to achieve the impossible,” he told reporters after witnessing the swearing-in ceremony for the Sri Aman District Council (MDSA) yesterday.
“Pandelela’s success is not a coincidence but it is the hard work and the sacrifice contributed by her parents, which played a big role in it.”
On whether Pandelela would get a ‘Datukship’ following her success in Rio, Uggah said the matter would be discussed with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.
“Apart from the perks listed in the athlete’s excellence schemes, we will discuss other perks if necessary,” he said.
Pandelela will competing in the women’s individual 10m platform next Thursday.
She won the silver medal for the women’s synchronised 10m platform together with Cheong Jun Hoong on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Uggah called on MDSA to come up with a development masterplan for Sri Aman.
He said the state government is committed to help MDSA implement projects for the good of the people.
Richard Tawan Sedu, who was reappointed chairman, highlighted Sri Aman’s problems with drainage and parking spaces.
